Background and location
VetyAlfa has initiated a significant green hydrogen refining project in Utajärvi, Northern Ostrobothnia. In its scope the Mustikkakangas project aligns with VetyAlfa’s Vaala and Kemijärvi projects announced in 2024, which target the development of hydrogen separation and processing facilities with a capacity of 200–1,000 MW.
The Mustikkakangas project area is located on municipally owned land and covers approximately 20 hectares. A local zoning process is currently underway, and the planning work carefully takes into account the environmental values of the area. The location offers strong logistical advantages, as the site has access to a nearby railway network, enabling efficient transportation of raw materials to the facility and finished products to markets.
Hydrogen production ja derivates
The operation of the refinery would be based on renewable electricity. The electrolysers required for hydrogen production would receive part of their power from a solar power plant developed in parallel, with a planned capacity of approximately 100–200 MWp.
The production facility would be connected to the regional electricity grid at either the 110 kV or 400 kV level.
At full capacity, the refinery could produce up to 180,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year. The specific hydrogen derivatives will be defined as the project progresses, based on market demand. Potential end products include e-methane, e-methanol, ammonia, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
Project development status
Utajärvi Mustikkakangas, the town zoning is currently underway.
The environmental impact assessment (EIA) process for the project will start in 2025. The project could be completed and the new hydrogen facility could start up 2028-2029.
