Background and location

VetyAlfa is planning a hybrid renewable energy project in the Meltaus area of Rovaniemi, focused on a 50 MW green hydrogen production plant.

The project combines hydrogen production with locally generated renewable electricity. In connection with the hydrogen plant, the project includes the development of approximately 50 MWp of solar power generation as well as three wind turbines with a combined capacity of approximately 18–30 MW. This solution enables hydrogen production using locally produced renewable electricity. The project area is located approximately 10 kilometres from Meltaus and about 55 kilometres from the centre of Rovaniemi. The site is adjacent to a 110 kV transmission grid power line, to which the project is planned to be connected. The total planning area covers approximately 500 hectares.

Hydrogen production

The hydrogen plant would produce green hydrogen through electrolysis using renewable electricity generated by the wind and solar power facilities planned as part of the project.

Project development status

The project does not require an environmental impact assessment (EIA). The zoning process has progressed to the participation and assessment plan stage. Further development of the project will proceed in line with the zoning process and other required permitting.

Regional impact

The project will create permanent jobs during construction and operation, as well as indirect employment effects. For the city, the hybrid project will generate direct tax revenues from property, municipal and community taxes, in addition to local labour taxes. In addition, the project would improve Rovaniemi’s attractiveness for investment and enable the growth of new businesses that need green hydrogen.
